+ Darlington Extension 2022

Schematic design proposal for the renovation of a very dilapidated jarrah framed house in Perth's hills. The existing house sits on a steep site in a state of disrepair. Needing to be structurally reinforced, and cleared of the jumble of rooms making that make the plan a rabbit’s warren. The client initially required 3 bedrooms, with at least two bathrooms, a large dining space for his bespoke 4m table, and walls to display his art collection.

With economy in mind, and by respecting the existing limitations and boundaries of the building, our proposal introduces a central service spine, freeing up the northern portion of the plan to living and dining. The the plan is divided directly in half and utilises the existing structural logic of the thinly framed jarrah construction.

The kitchen is a galley that opens up onto the future courtyard at the rear. A new ceiling is introduced in the services half of the building, whilst the living spaces have a raked ceiling, replacing the low current ceiling. New glazing and large openings are made to take advantage of the views to the canopy outside. whilst new landscaping of the steep driveway leads visitors up to the patio and balcony.
