+ Carport for an Orange Van 2018

Room 1.06 - Team: Felix Joensson, Oliver Campbell

Budget: 10.000 AUD

Built

This was a design and build project for addition of a new carport, deck modification and garden renewal. The condition of existing house - a modified post war bungalow, was altered to open the decking up to the garden, and re-stablish a connection to the street. The requirement for a single carport for a van, incorporating storage, accessible from the deck, was a requirement of the owner.

The main design challenge was to alleviate the mass of the carport given the slope of the site and allow a structure tall enough for a mezzanine. Building codes were challenged by setting back the street side cladding and cantilevering an eave to cover the length of the van, open on the southern side to the garden.

The project uses the existing material palette - brick, limestone, corrugated iron and timber to integrate with the current house, which displays a spirit of D.I.Y.

Timber slats are used vertically as a screen on the southern façade of the carport, whilst the mass brick stair and pier reference the house’s old chimney. The landing of the new stair provides access to a native garden, and the lowering of existing timber screens around the deck connects the house to the street.

Undertaken as a design/construct, room1.06 were also the builders and worked on site.
